Spring Goals: What Do You Manage?

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

Spring may actually be here – FINALLY!

There is snow still hitting the mountains, but it is starting to be slushy and sluggish. Spring weather is teasing us on a daily basis and gaining its own confidence.

This is when the last of the first quarter goals, results, and resolutions start to feel like a hangover and we get ready to slough off those winter blues and start new with spring goals. It’s as if making new resolutions will make up for what we missed in the first quarter!

Personally, my first quarter started off with a bang and I found out quickly what it’s like to be so busy you forgot to fill the pipeline for continued success. Yikes! I’m in the thick of the spring scramble already! All great new problems to have. This is when your brain can start to play tricks on you too.

THE FIRST SIGN IS SELF-DOUBT. Managers can step into self-doubt in a variety of ways: managing a team that is getting itchy with the desire for new opportunities, changing their own career path, or asking for more challenges.

Managers are NOT hired to manage people! Let’s get that out there; they are hired to manage expectations and results.

If you are a manager who is looking for tips to help spread clarity and support, to communicate clear expectations, and identify the results you need and your team wants to be a part of – keep in mind something that Mel Robbins offers:

“Doubts create mountains, action moves them.”

I know what you’re thinking: “Carole, I don’t want memes for my wall; I want clarity and confidence to be the best manager I can be – today.”

Guess what! You know what you need to do, you are just doubting how to do it.

THE CONFIDENCE-COMPETENCY LOOP The Confidence-Competency Loop identifies that confidence is just the decision to try (and take action) and self-doubt is the decision to not try (to not take action). I was reminded of this concept via Mel Robbins.

Mel Robbins suggests you try the 5 second rule.

You literally count 5-4-3-2-1 and boom – you do what you have to do next. This will beat anything in your way – especially the way you talk yourself out of things. I use this. It’s just one of many tools, but I find I use the 5 second rule at least once a day.

Try this when you’re debating your next step in a project or an onerous task at work or in life. 5-4-3-2-1 … do the dishes! 5-4-3-2-1 … Make that difficult phone call!

Don’t just make spring goals – nail them!

Spring and the prospect of looking at a calendar that is open with new possibilities requires me to get on the phone, network, reach out, get uncomfortable, and love the people that life puts in front of me. Please be one of those people, because I get to work with THE best people. This is my self-less plug:
